TOURIST ATTRACTIONS : VARIOUS PLACES IN SIVSAGAR, ASSAM

Sivsagar was the Capital of Ahoms who ruled Assam for about six hundred years till the advent of the British, located at a distance of 369 KM east of Guwahati in the south bank of the Brahmaputra.There is a very big tank in the town called Sivsagar dug by the Ahom king Siva Singha more than 250 years ago.The tank Sivsagar covers 51.91 HA of area.. On its bank there stank three temples viz. the siva dol, Vishnu Dol and Devi dol built by queen Ambika, wife of king Siva Singha in 1734. The siva dol is believed to be the second highest siva temple in India (Height 36 Meters). Apart from itthe Talatal Ghar (Multistoried Palace), a seven storied palace with three storied below the ground level, is an architectural marvel of Ahom period.It was built by Ahom king Rudra Singha (1696-1714) and lies at a distance of only 6 KM from Sivsagar town, It is said that there were two underground tunnels from it connecting Dikhow River and Gargaon Palace. Ranghar, a two stories oval shaped pavilion is located near Talatal ghar and was used by Ahom Royalties to watch elephant and buffallo fight and other sports events.

JOYSAGAR : Joysagar tank and temple is another important spot of attraction of sivsagar district built by Ahom King Rudra Singha in memory of his mother Joymoti in 1798. The tank covers an area of 62.61 HA on the bank of the tank there lie three temples Viz. Joy dol, Siva Dol, and devi dol.

GAURISAGAR : Gaurisagar tank and temple lie at a distance of about 12 KM west to sivsagar town. Quees Phuleswari constructed it in 1734. The temple and the tank are sesicated to the Godess Durga. The tank covers 60.5HA of area on the bank of the tank there lie three temples . They are Devi dol, Siva Dol and Vishnu Dol.

AJAN PIR DARGAH : Located at a distance of 8KM north of Gaurisagar and about 20KM north west of Sivsagar town, there lies a Dargah of Hajrat Ajan Pir, the Muslim saint famous for his contribution to the assamese devotional songs Jikir and Jari. Every year during Isale Sahab in the month of February thousand of devotees visits this place to pay homage to the saint.

GARGAON : Gargaon was the capital town of the Ahom Kingdom developed by the King Suklengmung in 1540 with palace and rampart. The old place was destroyed and existing seven-storied palace, another architectural marvel of Ahom period, was rebuilt around 1762 by the King Rajeswar Singha. At present gargaon palace is an important site for excursionists.

CHARAIDEO : Charaideo is the original capital of Ahoms developed by the founder of Ahom dynasty, seu-Ka-Pha in 1253AD. The site is located at a distance of 28KM to the east of Sivsagar town . It is famous for maidams or Burial vaults of Ahom kings and the other members of the royal family.

Over the years the historical monuments of sivsagar have been able to attract lots of devotees and researchers of the Ahom Architecture. The monuments in and aroung sivsagar town viz. Siva dol, talatal ghar, Rang ghar attract more people than the others, Distributed all over the district. Rangghar and talatal ghar attract about 1200-1500 excursionist as well as the tourist also per day in the winter season.
