TOURIST ATTRACTIONS : VARIOUS PLACES IN SIVSAGAR, ASSAM

Sivsagar was the Capital of Ahoms who ruled Assam for about six hundred years till the advent of the British, located at a distance of 369 KM east of Guwahati in the south bank of the Brahmaputra.There is a very big tank in the town called Sivsagar dug by the Ahom king Siva Singha more than 250 years ago.The tank Sivsagar covers 51.91 HA of area.. On its bank there stank three temples viz. the siva dol, Vishnu Dol and Devi dol built by queen Ambika, wife of king Siva Singha in 1734. The siva dol is believed to be the second highest siva temple in India (Height 36 Meters). Apart from itthe Talatal Ghar (Multistoried Palace), a seven storied palace with three storied below the ground level, is an architectural marvel of Ahom period.It was built by Ahom king Rudra Singha (1696-1714) and lies at a distance of only 6 KM from Sivsagar town, It is said that there were two underground tunnels from it connecting Dikhow River and Gargaon Palace. Ranghar, a two stories oval shaped pavilion is located near Talatal ghar and was used by Ahom Royalties to watch elephant and buffallo fight and other sports events.

JOYSAGAR : Joysagar tank and temple is another important spot of attraction of sivsagar district built by Ahom King Rudra Singha in memory of his mother Joymoti in 1798. The tank covers an area of 62.61 HA on the bank of the tank there lie three temples Viz. Joy dol, Siva Dol, and devi dol.

GAURISAGAR : Gaurisagar tank and temple lie at a distance of about 12 KM west to sivsagar town. Quees Phuleswari constructed it in 1734. The temple and the tank are sesicated to the Godess Durga. The tank covers 60.5HA of area on the bank of the tank there lie three temples . They are Devi dol, Siva Dol and Vishnu Dol.

AJAN PIR DARGAH : Located at a distance of 8KM north of Gaurisagar and about 20KM north west of Sivsagar town, there lies a Dargah of Hajrat Ajan Pir, the Muslim saint famous for his contribution to the assamese devotional songs Jikir and Jari. Every year during Isale Sahab in the month of February thousand of devotees visits this place to pay homage to the saint.

GARGAON : Gargaon was the capital town of the Ahom Kingdom developed by the King Suklengmung in 1540 with palace and rampart. The old place was destroyed and existing seven-storied palace, another architectural marvel of Ahom period, was rebuilt around 1762 by the King Rajeswar Singha. At present gargaon palace is an important site for excursionists.

CHARAIDEO : Charaideo is the original capital of Ahoms developed by the founder of Ahom dynasty, seu-Ka-Pha in 1253AD. The site is located at a distance of 28KM to the east of Sivsagar town . It is famous for maidams or Burial vaults of Ahom kings and the other members of the royal family.

Over the years the historical monuments of sivsagar have been able to attract lots of devotees and researchers of the Ahom Architecture. The monuments in and aroung sivsagar town viz. Siva dol, talatal ghar, Rang ghar attract more people than the others, Distributed all over the district. Rangghar and talatal ghar attract about 1200-1500 excursionist as well as the tourist also per day in the winter season.

In Simple words, you can tell Guwahati is a Temple city. There is various tourist attraction places in Guwahati. Here i trying to give descriptions about some places in Guwahati, Assam. Guwahati is the only important urban agglomeration og the state, with an area of 206.53 Sq.KM and a population of 8,08,021 (2001),situated on the bank of the river Brahmaputra, the ast growing city plays the role of a gateway to Assam as well as the entire North Eastern Region.

At present , the department of tourism has tried to project mainly five tourist Spots within the city. These are.... Kamakhya Temple, Basistha Ashran, Nabagraha Temple, State Zoo, State Museum & Gandhi Mandap.

KAMAKHYA TEMPLE : The Kamakhya temple is well known as an important center of pilgrimage.The temple is visited by 800 visitors per day on an average in the Rainy season (May to Sept) and by about 2000 visitors per day in the dry season (Oct to April).The Congregation is highest during the AMBUBACHI fair held annualy during the last part of June.In this period about one lakh devotees daily visit the temple.It is located on the top of Nilachal Hill (293 M) at a distance of about 9KM to thewest of the city Centre.



BASISTHA ASHRAM : The second spot in Guwahati, Basistha Ashram by name is considered to be the hermitage of the legendary sage Basistha. It is located in the South-East fringe of the city at a distance of 14KM from the city center. It is an ideal scenic as well as pilgrimage spot. The Ahom king Rajeswar Singha (1751-1769) constructed this temple. The site is endowed with Teracotta and stone sculptures.Natural and scenic beauty especially in the upstream of Basistha River is another attraction of this spot.



NABAGRAHA TEMPLE : It is located on the top of the Chitrachal Hill (216M) at a distace of 3KM from the Guwahati Railway Station. As per the description of The KALIKA PURANA, Lord Brahma created planets and other heavenly bodies from this site.The temple with the images of the nine planets (NABAGRAHA)is believed to be an ancient seat of study of asstrology and astronomy.Ahom King Rajeswar Singha constructed the existing temple in 1752AD.



STATE ZOO CUM BOTANICAL GARDEN : State zoo cum Botanical Garden is another popular destination for tourist.It is located at a distance of nearly 5 KM from the city centre. The zoo cum botanical garden is basically natural in the sense that it covers the south western slopes of the Japorigog Hill , which is a part of the Hengerabari Reserve Forest.Established in 1957, the zoo cum botanical garden is the first of its kind in the whole of the North Eastern Region.By Covering an area of 130 hectres it contains 63
species of indigenous and exotic mammals, 62 species of birds and 13 species of reptiles.The flora of Botanical Garden is represented by 162 species of tree, 177 species of shrubs, 163 species of herbs. Apart from these the zoo cum botanical garden has other added attractions like childrens park, forest museum, orchid house, a lake with Boating facility, watch tower, palm grove and a herbarium, which make it a center of attraction for the local people and tourists.

ASSAM STATE MUSEUM : It is the another important point for tourists, which is located near Dighalipukhuri in the heart of the city. KAMRUP ANUSANDHAN SAMITI established the museum in 1940 and in the year 1953 it was taken over by the state gevernment. It is one of the richest museum of the North Eastern Region in terms of collection and exhibits. The exhibits are displayed in ten differenr sections viz. Epigraphy, Sculpture, Natural History, Art and Craft, Old costumes, musical instruments, literatures, ethnography, arms and ammunitions and misellaneous section. A large number of local visitors, excurtionists, and domestic tourists visits this museum daily.

GANDHI MANDAP : The memorial of the Father of the Nation, Ganhi Mandap located at the top of the Sarania Hill (180M). This also provides an ideal view of the fast growing cityscape.

Apart from these, UMANANDA and SUKLESWAR temples are other two attractive sites. Umananda has a temple devoted to the Lord Shivain the midst of the river Brahmaputra on a small river island near Kacharighat.The British called it Peacock Island. The temple is constructed by Gadadhar Singha (1681-1696AD). An annual fair is held here on the occasion of Sivaratri during February.



Sukleswar is another Shiva Temple located near Panbazar locality on the bank of the River Brahmaputra.The present temple was constructed by the Ahom King Pramatta Singha (C1720AD).

Some comparatively recent attractions like the Planetarium, Gita Mandir, Balaji Temple, and Sankardev Kalakhetra developed within the city environment have also been able to pull tourists in addition to the local visitors.
